Moving cities before the job

Y

I moved to Denver in May without a job lined up. People called it brave. It was mostly a spreadsheet, and this is what was in it.

Why it works: A bold move explained calmly shows you plan, not panic.

03Opinion

Your old title says nothing, the work does

Y

My last title was “Senior Associate.” It tells you nothing. So here is what I actually did there, in three lines.

Why it works: It gets past a vague title and shows real work in a few lines.

A year since your last day at work

Y
You

One year ago today was my last day at my old company. Since then: two contracts, one startup idea that didn’t work, and 31 coffee chats. This is where I’ve landed.

Why it works: An anniversary with honest numbers makes a full year easy to follow.

05Behind the scenes

Practising interview answers on video

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
I practise interview answers by recording myself on my phone. The first time I watched it back, I counted 17 “ums” in two minutes.

Why it works: A funny, honest detail plus a method other people can try tonight.

06Question

How you learn what a team is really like

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
For people who changed jobs recently: how did you find out what the team was really like before you said yes? I have two final rounds next week and want to ask better questions.

Why it works: Two final rounds sounds strong, and the question gets thoughtful replies.

07Story

The morning you were laid off

Y
You
Open to work

I got the meeting invite at 9:02 AM on a Thursday. No agenda, just HR and my manager. By 9:20 I didn’t have a job. This is what I did by lunch.

Why it works: Exact times make it real, and the turn to action keeps it strong, not sad.

08Lesson

A rejection that came with feedback

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
The recruiter’s rejection email had one extra line in it. “You were strong, but you never asked us a single question.” I haven’t made that mistake since.

Why it works: Sharing feedback you used shows you grow from a no.

09Opinion

The gap on your CV you no longer hide

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
There’s a 14-month gap on my CV. I don’t hide it anymore. I spent it caring for my dad, and it taught me more about running things than my last job did.

Why it works: Owning a gap with calm confidence gets support and respect.

10Numbers

What a portfolio link did for replies

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
For two months I sent my CV and nothing else. My reply rate was about 1 in 20. Then I added a one-page portfolio link to every email. The rate changed in a week.

Why it works: A small change with a measurable result is a tip people save.

11Behind the scenes

What your job-hunting day looks like

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
People think job hunting means sending applications all day. Mine is two hours of applications, two hours of learning, and one walk I don’t skip.

Why it works: A steady routine shows discipline, which is what employers want to see.

12Question

What hiring managers notice first

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
Hiring managers, what’s the first thing you look at when a CV reaches you? I’m asking because I’ve rewritten my top section four times this month.

Why it works: It invites hiring managers into your post, which is exactly who you want there.

13Story

The project you built while looking

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
I’m between roles, so I gave myself a project. A dashboard that tracks bus delays in my city, built from open data. It’s live now, and 300 people used it last week.

Why it works: Shipping something while you look proves your skills better than a CV line.

14Lesson

The referral you waited too long to ask for

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
I waited three weeks to ask an old teammate for a referral. I was worried it would feel like begging. She replied in four minutes. “Why didn’t you ask sooner?”

Why it works: Everyone hesitates to ask. A warm result gives others the nerve to try.

15Opinion

Why you turned down an offer

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
Last week I said no to a job offer. Good salary, known brand, and a manager who checked his phone through the final interview. I’ve been looking for three months. I’d still say no.

Why it works: Saying no from a place of strength is the opposite of desperate.

16Numbers

The salary number you said out loud

Y
You
Open to work
Now ·
For years I answered the salary question with “I’m flexible.” In my last interview I said $95,000 and stopped talking. The silence lasted four seconds.

Why it works: Everyone dreads this moment. A real number and a real pause make it vivid.

17Behind the scenes

Your night before an interview

Y
You
Open to work

The night before an interview I do three things, and none of them is rereading my CV. I cook something easy, lay out my clothes, and write down two stories I want to tell.

Why it works: A calm, copyable routine is the kind of post people bookmark.

18Question

Which skill to learn in the next six weeks

Y
You
Open to work

I have six weeks before my notice period ends, and I want to learn one skill properly. SQL or Figma, for someone moving into product operations? I’d value your take.

Why it works: A specific either-or question is easy to answer and shows you plan ahead.

19Story

The career change you’re making now

Y

I taught high school chemistry for nine years. This month I’m looking for my first role in instructional design. This is why I’m switching now, and what I bring with me.

Why it works: A clear switch with a reason helps people picture you in the new role.

20Lesson

A take-home task that got ghosted

Y
You

I spent 11 hours on a take-home task for a company that never replied. I was annoyed for a day. Then I put the work in my portfolio, and it got me my next interview.

Why it works: Turning a bad experience into something useful shows resilience without moaning.

Why these ideas work

Looking for work is lonely in a way people don’t talk about. You spend all day writing about yourself to people who don’t write back.

LinkedIn makes it worse. Every post you see is someone’s promotion, so you go quiet, right when being seen matters most.

Frankly speaking, the people who find roles fastest aren’t the ones who post the most. They show the work they do and say clearly what they want next. Every idea here helps you do that without sounding like you’re pleading.

How to use them

Pick an idea that lets you show something real. A project, a number, a lesson from an interview. Skip anything that turns into a complaint about the market.

End most posts with what you’re looking for. The role, the industry, the city. People can’t help you if they have to guess.

Tip: Never write “I’m desperate” or “please share”, even as a joke. Recruiters read those lines too, and they remember them.

New ideas go up every Monday. Bookmark this page and make it part of your weekly routine while you look.

What should I post on LinkedIn when I’m looking for a job?

Post about the work you can do. A project you led, a problem you solved, a skill you’re building now. Then say what role you want, so people know how to help.

How do I post about a layoff without sounding desperate?

Keep it short and look forward. Say what happened in one line, what you’re proud of, and what you want next. Leave out blame, and leave out apologies.

Do I have to pay to use these ideas?

No. Every idea and opening here is free, and you don’t need to sign up. A free Wiral account lets Wiri write the post with you.

Can Wiri write a post about my job search?

Yes. Tell Wiri what you’re looking for and one thing you’re proud of, and it writes three posts in your voice. Pick one, change what you like, and post.
